What is web eco-design?

CSR - February 24, 2020
Today, the world is alerted by the many inconveniences that affect nature. Pollution is growing and growing, despite the many laws and reforms put in place with regard to nature.

Eco-design is part of this very specific list of concepts created with the aim of making men and women in both the industrial and IT sectors more responsible and, above all, aware. But in reality, what is this new eco-design trend?

Eco-design in general

Eco-design by definition is a term that is increasingly taking pride of place in everyone's decisions, we could say that it is the creation of a product or service while scrupulously respecting all the multiple principles of sustainable development, but also those of the environment.
Thus, according to well-known structures such as ADEME, the Agency for the Environment and Energy Management, eco-design as characteristics must involve less and less non-renewable resources and more and more renewable ones.

How eco-design works

Generally speaking, the latter is present in each step of a complete cycle of 6 total steps. The latter are also the very expression of the life of a product.

  • So it can all start with the design that includes the idea of how to set up the product. This varies according to the products and others;
  • We can continue with the extraction, which is the process that will highlight the modification;
  • Manufacturing, which is the stage where the product takes real shape;
  • Transportation, which includes both moving from the factory to the sales shop and from the factory to your home;
  • Use that involves all forms including washing, repairing and others;
  • The end of life, which indicates the destruction of the product.

It is therefore this rather impressive cycle that characterizes the life of a product from the extraction of ores to the end of the product's life. And in each of these stages, eco-design and its operation are elements that must come back at all times, because each influences the environment in one way or another.

Web eco-design

Yes, we can also talk about eco-design in the IT field, especially when it comes to websites. Indeed, in this case, eco-design could be defined as the fact of considerably reducing the impact of computer software on both the environment and the economy. To do this, it will be necessary to make their creation more efficient. To sum it up, the aim here is to considerably reduce the amount of IT and telecoms resources used.
As with consumable products, there is also a web eco-design cycle which is also divided into 6 fairly clear steps. We can highlight:

  • Driving Zoning; that reflects the idea of the product;
  • Responsible materiel management;
  • The design of the website itself according to very specific elements;
  • Eco accommodation;
  • Navigation thanks to a reduction in the number of pages;
  • The deletion of the site or even end of life.

At each of these stages, eco-design must be clearly felt to keep the environment clean and sustainable.
